A family-run Thermal Spa hotel in the rolling countryside of eastern Styria, opened by the Unterweger family close to thirty years ago and now passing to the next generation. It is one of only three Austrian properties holding a perfect twenty-out-of-twenty rating in the 2026 RELAX Guide — the anonymous, independently tested German-language guide that remains the most demanding assessment of wellness hotels in the region.

That distinction matters more than it might appear. RELAX inspectors visit unannounced and pay their own way, and the guide is unusually willing to downgrade well-known names. Steirerhof shares its top rating with Lanserhof Lans, which places a countryside spa hotel alongside one of Europe's most serious medical clinics on a like-for-like assessment of what each sets out to do.

The thermal water rises at 62°C from 1,200 metres. The spa covers more than 3,000 square metres, is reserved for hotel guests, and holds seven pools with 800 square metres of water surface, ten saunas, a natural pool with a nude bathing area and Austria's first ladies-only spa. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine sit alongside the thermal offer, and the kitchen has held the Grüne Haube for healthy regional cooking for more than twenty-five years.

The hotel describes itself as a five-star property but not a luxury product, and the distinction is worth taking at face value — the register is comfort and consistency rather than opulence.

It is also more interventional than the country-hotel manner suggests. A five-night Longevity Recharge programme combines medical supervision, whole-body cryotherapy, intermittent hypoxic-hyperoxic training and a closing medical consultation; a separate back package pairs physiotherapy with spine measurement. What it does not run is a physician-led fasting cure — fasting weeks are led by a qualified fasting trainer and nutritionist. Guests wanting a full diagnostic clinic should look to the Austrian clinics proper. Children under twelve are not admitted to the spa, and the house makes no provision for younger children.
