About

The independent guide to luxury wellness

WellAtlas brings together the world’s finest wellness destinations. Our ambition is to become the Michelin Guide of wellness.

Every wellness hotel looks serene in pictures. The pictures don’t tell you what a place actually offers, who it suits, or whether it’s right for your health and wellbeing goals. That is what WellAtlas sets out to answer.

The Guide

How destinations are selected

WellAtlas covers luxury wellness hotels and retreats, medical and longevity clinics, and high-end urban wellness spaces. To be included, a destination has to meet two standards.

A sophisticated wellness offering. A beautiful spa, a pool and a gym are where most hotels stop. We look for wellness that goes further and shapes the experience itself, such as:

  • Expertise: doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapists, naturopaths, or Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine practitioners, with consultations you can book.
  • Programmes: structured stays built around a goal, such as sleep, detox, stress, recovery, weight or fitness, with a defined length and content.
  • A method or tradition: an approach with real depth, such as Mayr, Chenot, authentic Ayurveda, Kneipp or thalassotherapy, or a healing tradition rooted in the place itself.
  • Exceptional facilities: thermal springs, seawater or mud used therapeutically, full hydrotherapy circuits, or serious movement and recovery infrastructure.
  • Wellness woven through the stay: a nutrition philosophy in the kitchen, attention to sleep, and daily movement and mindfulness built into the day.
  • Personalisation: assessments and diagnostics on arrival, and a plan tailored to you.

Each destination is judged on what it actually offers, not on its star rating, its awards or how well it photographs.

Genuinely high end. Whether it’s a resort, a clinic, a retreat or a city bathhouse, every destination sits at the top of its own market. Public and municipal facilities, family water parks and mass-market chains don’t qualify, however good their facilities.

Wellness as the reason to go. We ask one simple question: would someone travel here for the wellness? A hotel built mainly for conferences, or one guests choose for the golf, the safari or the beach, rarely qualifies, even if its spa is excellent. The wellness has to be one of the main reasons people come, not something to fill an afternoon.

Every destination is researched individually before it’s listed. When we write about one, we say what it’s for and what it isn’t.

The WellAtlas Score™

A five-star rating. Thousands of reviews. But who actually went?

The WellAtlas Score is a rating out of 100, built from two sources only: verified guests who can show they stayed or visited, and expert evaluations. We use no anonymous ratings, no AI estimates and nothing inferred from marketing.

A destination with no evaluations behind it shows “not yet scored” rather than a number we can’t defend. That means we grow more slowly than a site that lets anyone post, and it means a score here is worth something.

Listing is editorial. Destinations cannot pay for a place, a score or a feature.

What comes next

The WellAtlas 100 and the Awards

Each year, WellAtlas will publish The WellAtlas 100, a ranking of the hundred finest wellness and longevity destinations in the world, alongside the WellAtlas Awards™. Neither exists yet. A ranking is only worth reading when there is enough verified evaluation behind it, so we are building the evidence first.

A note from the founder

Why I created WellAtlas

Sabine Schmitt, Founder of WellAtlas
Sabine Schmitt, Founder WellAtlas

Wellness has become one of the main reasons we choose where to travel, yet finding places we can genuinely trust is surprisingly hard. I kept booking on the strength of reviews I had no reason to believe. WellAtlas is the guide I wanted and couldn’t find.

I’ve been passionate about health and wellness since a very young age, especially the daily habits of movement and the food choices I make. I later trained as a Certified Health & Wellness Coach, and I spent 17 years building a global luxury brand. Between the two, I’ve learned to tell real substance from good presentation.

WellAtlas is still young, and I’m building it one destination at a time. I’d love to hear from you. If you know somewhere exceptional that isn’t in the guide yet, or want to tell me what matters most to you when choosing a wellness destination, write to me at hello@wellatlas.co. And if you’ve stayed at or visited a destination already on WellAtlas, please share your review.
