Joali Being
Bodufushi, Raa Atoll, Maldives
The first resort in the Maldives built entirely around a clinical framework rather than a spa menu. Opened in 2021 by Turkish entrepreneur Esin Güral Argat on Bodufushi Island, Joali Being organises every guest's stay around four areas developed with Professor Gerry Bodeker, an Oxford-affiliated integrative medicine researcher: Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy. Arrival begins with a lengthy intake questionnaire covering diet, sleep, exercise and digestion, followed by a consultation that sets a personalised programme rather than a menu of optional treatments.
The infrastructure backs up the framing. A 39-treatment-room Wellness Centre — the largest of its kind in the Maldives — houses a hydrotherapy sanctuary with Watsu, a Banya steam room, an Aufguss sauna and a Turkish hammam, alongside a salt inhalation room, cryotherapy chamber, herbology apothecary staffed by a resident practitioner, and a sound-instrument path set among the palms. Meals are overseen by an in-house nutritionist team under an Earth-to-Table policy built around gut-supporting fermented foods, though the property also runs an overwater Japanese restaurant and a treehouse bar, so the register isn't austere.
This suits travellers willing to spend a week or more inside a structured programme rather than a beach holiday with spa access; the intake process alone signals the property expects genuine participation, not passive indulgence.
